Lydford, Devon

Welcome to Lydford Parish Council's website. We hope you will learn something of interest about this charming Devon village.

A settlement on the site we now know as Lydford, was first established by King Alfred sometime between 871 and 901. The Normans also saw its location as one that was easy to protect and built a fort here 200 years later. The site of a medieval castle and the fortified building that now stands on the site, dominating the village, gives its name to the neighbouring Castle Inn but It was the geographic location and its now famous Gorge that were the deciding factors in all those early settlements.
